                 Jonathan Smith is a Registered Professional Archaeologist and meets the qualifications for a professional archeologist as defined in Louisiana Code 25 as well as the professional guidelines for both history and archaeology as established by the U.S. Department of Interior.   He holds a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Mississippi where he was a member of Lambda Alpha.  Mr. Smith supplemented his degree with a minor in Computer Science coupled with GIS courses drawing from both the ESRI cerfication courses and applied GIS topics.  As part of the completion of his degree he attended the Jamestown Rediscovery field school at the site of the Jamestown Colony in Virginia, a six week field school focusing on excavation methods, artifact identification, and preservation primarily in historic contexts.  In addition he attended the University of Mississippi field school, a six week field school in which he followed a course of study emphasizing archaeological survey methods, collecting and processing remote sensing data, and integrating this data with GIS methods, primarily in prehistoric contexts. 

                 In 2006 he accepted a position at ESI as a GIS Technician/Archaeologist.  He worked as a field archaeologist on several projects including a Phase I survey of a 147-mile pipeline corridor across six counties in southwest Arkansas in 2006.  He was also responsible for preparing state site forms for several projects in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas.  As a member of the GIS team he generated maps and figures for numerous reports.  He developed a method of more easily importing Total Station data by applying a custom projection.  In addition he was responsible for preparing data recording equipment such as Trimble sub-meter GPS units, and maps for field teams.  Other responsibilities included training field crew, supporting crews remotely, and processing data from the field.  Among the projects he provided GIS support for were petroleum pipelines in Mississippi and Louisiana, historic property survey such as Jackson Barracks in New Orleans, and transportation infrastructure projects as well as FEMA standing structure and Red Tag surveys throughout Orleans Parish. 

                 Mr. Smith also holds a M.A. in Anthropology from East Carolina University in North Carolina.  During the course of his graduate work Mr. Smith performed several duties as part of his graduate assistantship with the Department of Anthropology.  He was Lab Manager for the Phelps Archaeology lab.  His duties included performing GPR surveys, processing GPR data, and generating maps and reports from the data using GIS and other technologies for both departmental purposes and outside contracts.  In addition he was responsible for maintaining equipment, inventorying equipment, maintaining records of artifacts pulled and returned to the lab’s archival storage facility, and assisting with introductory classes, including instructing students in the use of GPR equipment in the field.  He performed GPR suveys for several notable projects including a cemetery survey to establish the boundaries of an African American family cemetery prior to the construction of the new Dental School at East Carolina University. 

                 In 2010 Mr. Smith rejoined ESI and immediately began work on the MC 252/Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill.  His duties on the Oil Spill projected included assisting GIS personnel when needed, shoreline surveys of beach and marsh by boat, air, and pedestrian methods, daily status reports, and preparing both project reports and state site forms for revisited and newly discovered archaeological sites.  During the course of the BP project he received additional training in ESRI ArcPad and additional experience in the use of data recording equipment.  His experience with ArcGIS and ArcPad have allowed him to become proficient in GIS applications from the field to the back office.
